IPMS/US Nationals 2006
2-5.08.06
This year's event was held at the Crown Exhibit Center, Kansas City and there were, as usual, a lot of traders with lots of new and soon-to-be-releases products on show. Here are some of those that relate to the aviation side of the hobby.
All of the ADH titles were prominently displayed in the main hall area

The new 'Avionix' range from Black Box includes this excellent TF-104G cockpit for the new Hasegawa kit (See Issue 14)

Black Box also had their new cockpit set for the Trumpeter 1:32 SBD-1/-2 Dauntless on show (See Issue 14 for our full build of this kit).

It is always good to see old friends, in this instance Bob Sanchez of Two Bobs

Classic Airframes had an excellent display of their products

Along with built up versions of their Anson

... and their Canberra

While Fisher Models & Patterns had their stunning 1:32 Sea Fury on display

IsraDecal had this 1:48 IDF AH-64 conversion, part of their IsraCast range, on show

While Lone Star Models were showing off the parts of their forthcoming 1:48 Messerschmitt Me 264 kit

Another good friend, in this instance Mary Mone-Jurasek of Mission Models

Revell showed final test-shots of their 1:72 Fw 200 Condor, confirming that it is an all-new tooling. The kit should be on general release next month. Check out the inserts in the upper decking for the turrets, hinting that a civil version mat be planned for the future...?

The 'Three Amigos', Gaston Bernal (Aeromaster, left) and Maggie and Jef (Black Box, right)

Eduard were at the event with Vladimir Posipil ....

...and Vladimir Sulc on their stand.

Stevens International had a sample of the Trumpeter Wellington on show - look out for our build of this kit in a future edition of Model Airplane International.
Competition
The competition area was packed as usual, so here are our selection of some of the models on display.

Overall view of one of the aircraft category tables!

Excellent low-viz A-10 built from the Trumpeter 1:32 kit

Very nicely weathered A-20 built from the AMT/Ertl 1:48 kit.

A6M5 Zero built from Tamiya's excellent 1:32 kit

Some people like the P-47!

Excellent Ar 196, either built from the MPM or HiPM 1:48 kits

Hasegawa's old 1:72 B-47 very nicely finished

An effective bit of faded paint on this Tamiya 1:48 Beaufighter Mk VI.

This Bf 109G is 1:72!

... while this one is 1:48

CAC Boomerang - when will we have a mainstream 1:48 and 1:32 kit of this subject I wonder?

Hasegawa's 1:48 Typhoon 'Car Door' Mk Ib

Dornier Do 24T, probably 1:72, but it may be a resin 1:48 example.

Excellent weathering and detailing on this 1:48 F4U-1A Corsair

Well built, detailed and weathered F6F Hellcat, this time from Hasegawa's 1:32 kit

Funky colour scheme on this 1:48 El Salvador FG-1D Corsair

1:48 Firebrand, which we can't see being that detailed from the Magna resin kit, so it must be scratchbuilt?

Roden's 1:32 Fokker Dr.I with effective 'streaky' paintwork

That is lovely, Hasegawa's 1:72 G3M Nell, done to perfection.

Hansa-Brandenburg W.12 in 1:48
 Hasegawa's 1:72 He 111 in Rumanian colours

1:48 Heinkel He 112 in Spanish Civil War colours
Revell's excellent 1:32 Heinkel He 162, complete with unpainted fuselage, very nice!
Someone was quick building the MPM 1:48 He 177 (note instructions under it)!
A very nice paint scheme on this Tamiya 1:48 He 219A

This Polikarpov I-16 is in 1:72, from the Hasegawa kit

The IAR 80 in 1:72, probably built from the MPM kit?
Hasegawa 1:32 Ju 87G-2, not sure about the 'diving' pose though?

Macchi C.202 Folgore, and yes it is 1:72, from the Hasegawa kit!

While this is its big brother in 1:48

A lovely P-39, probably the Eduard kit as it was too early for it to be Hasegawa's

The finish close-up is excellent

We think this was 1:72, but the Privateer looks good in any scale!

Close-up of an excellently built and displayed Hasegawa 1:48 Dauntless

Spitfire Mk VIII in 1:48, probably from the Hasegawa kit.

Tamiya's 1:48 Swordifsh, it's not dirty enough though!

The Flashback 1:48 Eritch Taube, just look at all that rigging!

The builder of this TBD did a nice job of the old Monogram 1:48 tooling

Accurate Miniatures 1:48 Avengers always look good

Neat little 'Operation Torch' F4F Wildcat in 1:48

Aaahh, a Vichy French Boston, very nice!

A very worn F7F-3N Tigercat, built from the AMT/Ertl 1:48 kit

Classic Airframes' 1:48 Wyvern
Thanks to everyone who attended the show and all those who entered the competition. I don't think here in the UK we fully appreciate the effort required for many of you to do this - imagine moving models by air for a model show!
Next year's event will be in Orange County, Florida (we will be there with all the ADH titles), with the 2008 event confirmed for a return to Virginia Beach. Visit the IPMS/US website for more details and a complete list of competition winners at this year's event.
